UV Disinfection Technology Provides Safe Drinking Water for Rig Crew

IPH Validated UV systems deliver potable drinking water to offshore platform to meet strict project requirements

Challenge

Floatel Superior is a semi-submersible accommodation and construction support vessel. She is designed to meet the stringent rules and regulations for all year operation on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, an area with some of the most demanding regulatory requirements and some of the harshest environmental conditions in the world.

Floatel Superior is also designed for operations in tropical waters. The vessel features 440 air-conditioned cabins which can accommodate 440 people in a single bed configuration or 512 persons in a double bed configuration. The number of beds can be increased to 600.

Each cabin features a private bathroom, telephone, internet and television. The galley and mess can accommodate 220 persons in single seating configuration. Recreation facilities include a cinema/ meeting room, an internet café, a games room, a gymnasium and a sauna. The vessel was built by Keppel at the Singapore shipyard in accordance with DNV requirements.

Solution

In February 2014, the vessel arrived at Askøy, north of Bergen, for rig modification work by the Hanøytangen Group. Amongst the modifications was the installation of two ATG™ SX-225-8 ultraviolet disinfection systems, for the treatment of potable water. The systems were supplied by Processing AB, of Kungsbacka, Sweden.

Michael Nord, the Mechanical Design Engineer of Floatel International said: “It is absolutely vital to supply safe drinking water for the crew and personnel on this vessel. We chose atg UV Technology for the proven quality of its products and the approval of the UV system by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH). It was essential that the UV systems would be able to treat the worst quality of water that could conceivably be bunkered at a Norwegian port. The support we received from Processing AB has enabled us to complete this installation within the tight three-week period that the vessel was in Hanøytangen’s service area.”
